The marathon was held on Sunday, August 22, 1920 and 48 runners from 17 nations competed. The lenght of the race was 42.750 kilometers (26.56 miles). The Finnish athlete Hannes Kolehmainen set a new world record with 2:32:35.8, (the existing record was 2:36:07, set by Alexis Ahlgren in London on May 31, 1913).
